29 Nov Orion: the Aftermath

My, what a few insane days it has been. Orion hit the Apple website, while also being linked from other major sites like the Iconfactory. At the moment of writing, Orion just exceeded a grand total of 300 GB in downloads, with well over 150,000 new visitors on my websites. Actually, it’s the fourth most downloaded thing on Apple.com, just under iTunes, Quicktime, and Safari.

I got a lot of email asking how to use the icons, and I gladly replied; Kupuk’s great tutorial of the ‘good ol’ manual way’, and Panic’s awesome Candybar 3. Of course, your downloads are flattening and the kind emails and comments have been very encouraging. Work on the extended set of Orion, with all system replacements for Mac, Windows, and Linux, along with several creative new folder motifs, has commenced already. I will push out a new volume with a complete system replacement icons, and a dock for OS X, late in December or in January. What’s that? A sneak peek? Okay, one of the ‘fantasy’ microsets in the extended Orion is… a ‘sci-fi’ themed, highly detailed EVE Online architecture set.

The more complete the set the better, just so it’s easier to drop into CB and poof – stellar looking UI.

One thing I always wish for in replacement sets, particularly folder sets, is more generic folders. So the base folder with some color treatments just to have handy for marking or labeling. It’s great to have all of the system folders covered, but users have lots of other classifications and contexts where they use could use custom folders.

I’d really like a nice set of folders with multiple colors. I like to color code my files based on importance. It would be nice if you included some by default. I also would really like a full set of folder for OS X. You included many but left out some. Music, system folder, user, are just a few. It would be nice too if you added something inside the folders so they aren’t empty. I’d really like a folder for software maybe a bunch of cd’s?

Lastly maybe some custom drives with windows flag and the apple on it.

Keep up the great work. I really want to use this set, but it looks odd with many of the icons missing. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the full package.

I don’t play eve online but that set would look great on my MBP. I just pray that the completed Orion set will be faithfully freeware.. at least the full system replacement of the original Orion. Millions would use it, get addicted, and purchase the extended microsets such as above… ;-)

Love the icons — I would really like to see folders for something like torrent files or an application folder replacement! Great work!

    And thanks for your work!
