New freeware iconset release: Orion.

( Go to icon set directly)

For the last month, I have been working on a freeware icon set to supersede all my older work. I was interested in how much I could learn by attracting critique from the most valued artists and criticasters I have in my buddy lists and address book, and I took it all to the heart. I decided to make a folder set that would find the middle ground between the flat front-on perspective of Mac OS X Leopard and the old, spatial perspective of folders in Tiger.

To illustrate how much has changed while I worked on this set, I have drawn the base folder shape in the beginning, when I started working on it, and at the very end. The difference is staggering.

Well, I learned a lot. Now, I’ll let a little preview of it’s tiny front-on variants and let the website speak for itself! Download and use away, and oh, don’t forget giving valuable feedback!

  1. looks pretty good Sebastiaan,

    two topics of critique though:

    • the perspective on the 128px and up sizes of the harddisks looks a bit weird, the top seems stretched (in fact if you look at the 512px version the height of the visible part of the top at the left corner is 55px, the bottom is 48px)

    • the trashbags in the trash folder icon don’t really match with the visual style in the rest of the set; imho they’re a bit too ‘posterized’ if you get what i mean.

    cheers! dirk

  2. I have to agree with the previous comment about the harddisks and the trash folder.

I also have to add that the Yellow and Black tape on the Public Folder makes me think of a Private or Locked folder rather than Public.

Other than that, it’s a fantastic Icon set.

  4. Not being a designer, all I can say is that I love this set. Have you given any thought to a drive icon for network drives or shares? The icon for the Time Machine drive was what first caught my attention; simply brilliant…

  5. Darryl, I have made Network, Server drive and Airport drive icons, which I might release with a small update including other folders I wasn’t able to finish like Music, Applications, etc. I’ll see how well-received this set is and if it deserves a followup!

  8. I for one, have given this set of icons a warm welcome on my Mac alongside a few of from the War on Bad Design series that I love. Thanks for the hard work and dedication, it’s very much appreciated by many!
